WASTEWATER HOLDING TANK - PETROLEUM INDUSTRY

Biological Treatment Summary

The Situation

A major pipeline and energy services company faced non-compliance issues with their local wastewater treatment facility. In question was a large above ground storage tank that contained approximately 2,000,000 gallons [7,570m³] of wastewater. Initial testing indicated that oil & grease levels were well over the limit of 100 mg/L. In addition, TPH levels were also a concern. During their treatment program the levels stayed constant, and their storage capacity was being greatly reduced.

The Solution

Bio-Form LLC recommended treating the tank with OBT®. The proposal advised that an initial treatment be made, and the tank be continuously aerated and mixed. After 6 days, a sample was taken to determine whether or not a second treatment would be required.

The Results

Oil & Grease levels were determined to be 11.9 mg/L with TPH levels below detectable levels by an independent laboratory. It was determined that a second treatment would not be necessary, and the water was successfully discharged to the local wastewater treatment facility without any compliance issues.

City sampling and analysis during discharge confirmed the positive results. In addition, COD levels were historically low, greatly reducing the surcharge to the company.

mg/L = ppm (parts per million)
