Summary
The
Situation
A major
cruise
line
had
many
problems
on one
of its
many
cruising
vessels.
- The
company
was
facing
astronomical
surcharges
and
penalties
for
non-compliant
effluent
discharge
and
increasing
numbers
of
obnoxious
odors,
drain
line
blockages,
and
grease
build
up
were
making
sailing
guests
very
unhappy.
- The
Environmental
Protection
Agency
was
very
concerned
with
out
of
compliance
discharge
limits
from
the
ship
within
the
three-mile
territorial
boundary
of
the
United
States.
- Obnoxious
odors
were
emanating
from
organic
waste
build
up
in
drain
lines
as
well
as
drain
line
blockage
from
grease
build
up
within
the
drain
lines
causing
disturbing
complaints
by
sailing
guests.
- Excessive
numbers
of
calls
for
plumbers
by
sailing
guests
to
clear
back-flowing
drains
was
becoming
tiresome
for
the
ship's
crew.
The
company
was
becoming
very
distraught
with
the
arising
problems
and
needed
a pragmatic
environmental
solution
to resolve
this
dilemma.
The
Solution
Bio-Form
LLC
proposed
a biological
treatment
program
that
consisted
of the
addition
and
utilization
of BZT®
Waste
Digester.
It was
proposed
that
an initial
seed
application
be performed
followed
by regular
maintenance
application
into
three
predetermined
designated
sections
of the
ship.
The
treatment
program
was
designed
to:
- Significantly
reduce
or
eliminate
fats,
oils
and
greases
in
the
main
grease
trap
and
grey
water
filter,
which
would
also
reduce
costs
and
labor
in
cleaning
the
units.
- Significantly
reduce
or
eliminate
emanating
odors
coming
from
drain
lines
throughout
the
entire
ship.
The
Results
- Within
seven
(7)
days,
all
obnoxious
odors
were
gone.
- The
FOG
problems
in
the
grease
traps
and
grey
water
filters
were
eliminated.
- The
drains
back
up
problems
in
the
galleys
and
cabins
were
reduced
by
98%.
Because
of the
success
of this
program,
Bio-Form
LLC
is now
expanding
this
treatment
program
in the
fleet.
