WASTEWATER - TREATMENT PLANTS

We have had a lot of questions about time frames for noticeable results when treating municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) with BZT® Waste Digester.

First of all, we are dealing with microorganisms. We are not dealing with the quick fix of chemicals and remember that they destroy biological growth. Microorganisms must take control of the WWTP system and become established. This process takes time. As the microorganisms take control and form a strong biomass in the WWTP system, operators can observe a number of the changes taking place:

  • Settled solids will not go septic and settling will improve in secondary clarifiers.
  • Reduced effluent Total Suspended Solids (TSS).
  • Faster solids settling on a 30 minute settling test.
  • Breakdown of filamentous organisms improving settling and reducing bulking.
  • Reduction in offensive odors.
  • Reduction in BOD.
  • Reduction/elimination of foaming.
  • Return Activated Sludge (RAS) and Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) concentrations to improve with improved settling.
  • Over time, the dewatering operation will see improvements leading to reduced use of polymers and/or belt press operation.
  • Trickling filters, SBR and RBC will have a more effective biomass established within 60 day time frame enabling them to be able to withstand sudden toxic shocks and also assist in keeping trickling filter orifices and end gates clear reducing maintenance and filter fly larvae breeding areas.
  • "Lava Lamping" - As the biomass is being established, a cleaning of the system will start with carbon dioxide tying up in the solids, causing the solids to break loose and float to the surface. All of these "lava lamping" solids will breakdown. During this time, there could be a slight increase in turbidity and/or TSS. After this cleansing period, there will be better solids settling.
  • MLSS levels may increase after the start of the treatment program as BOD is being converted to biomass in the aeration basin.

Remember using BZT® Waste Digester is not a quick fix but rather an environmentally safe, cost effective long-term solution to wastewater treatment plant problems.
